Several sacred sites in India are found on the 3,000k long riverbank. Varanasi, also known as Benares, is one of nine holy Hindu towns. Situated on the left bank of the Ganges, the town facing the rising sun is a landmark for pilgrimage. Benares is famous for its ghats which provide a passage to the river to carry out ablutions and set up pyres for the dead. Frequented by hermits and pilgrims for more than 3,000 years, the town is dedicated to Shiva, the husband of Ganga, the goddess of the Ganges.
